You can get married in Australia in a calendar month as long as you have completed a Notice of Intended Marriage, had it signed by an appropriate witness and given the paperwork to a celebrant or submitted the paperwork at registry office.

The current requirements to get married, at the date of publication are:

  1. Complete, sign and have witnessed the Notice of Intended Marriage
  2. Give the complete Notice to a celebrant or lodge with the registry office.
  3. Show the celebrant / registry officer your passports or birth certificates and drivers licenses and also any relevant documents like divorce papers.
  4. Wait 1 calendar month from the date you lodged your paperwork with the celebrant/registry officer.
  5. Sign the Declaration of No Legal Impediment with your celebrant.
  6. Participate in a marriage ceremony (yes this is different to a wedding).
  7. The celebrant will then lodge your paperwork with the state Birth, Deaths and Marriages authority.

Getting Married Quickly in Australia

Under certain circumstances what’s known as a Shortening Of Time can be granted to couples who wish to get married in less that the required 1 calendar month.
